      Objectives: As with any start up, the challenges for an iron-ore site were daunting. Ore supplies needed to be predictable, stable and profitable. Equally, the infrastructure needed to be established to ramp up production in line with demand. Being publicly listed, production targets and first shipment dates had been announced, including the intention of doubling output within 12 months. A combination of unpredicted events, slow progress and issues with the local community left the Chief Executive with a problem.

      Approach: The focus was firmly on outcomes but equally on scalability, and initiatives were rolled out concurrently. A comprehensive project plan was developed, incorporating the development and installation of the necessary management tools and systems to drive mine performance, supported by the training and coaching required to embed the right behaviors across management and the workforce. Leadership team roles and responsibilities were outlined and alignment sessions conducted. A key focus was the local community and key government stakeholders to address levels of mistrust and foster acceptance of the mining project.

      Results: Operational readiness was delivered in less than five months and key realistic start up milestones established and achieved. World class mining standards were established and production predictability secured and ready for ramp up. Additionally, relations with the local community were cemented, leading to further profitable interactions.

      Objective: Facing a five-year decline in long-term value of iron ore, a leading producer of high-grade iron ore products cut its budget by 6% to maintain cost effectiveness. However, only a few months later, the cost reduction project was at risk. Planning and measurement problems only compounded the issue by projecting a production shortfall of more than 5%.

      Approach: Alexander Proudfoot and the client began by setting up a standardized format for identifying projected savings and then helped establish a centralized project management office to provide coordination and accountability for achieving desired outcomes. The team also re-trained client staff to ensure consistency in measuring and reporting results.  

      Results: Alexander Proudfoot not only restored the company's initial-year cost reduction program, but also laid the foundation for a second and third year ongoing effort to address worldwide pricing and cost containment issues. The client achieved a reliable and highly effective process for identifying potential cost savings. The system provided clarity, responsibility and accountability for the cost reduction project.
